9:15-10:15:  Reading Workshop:  This workshop begins with the teacher reading a book related to our current theme.  Discussion follows as to what the expectations and focus will be during the workshop.  Then, students self-select literature to read alone or quietly with a friend.  I monitor progress by frequently checking in with student conferences.  Students may also be in a reading group with peers who are approximately on the same level.  Each student is responsible for keeping an accurate reading record found in his/her reading folder.  This workshop ends with a student sharing a book (Book Talk) that he/she enjoyed during the workshop.

10:15-10:45- Snack/DEAR Time: Students quietly get snacks and are responsible for carefully cleaning up after themselves.  They may read quietly until the remainder of the class finishes eating.

10:45-12:00- Writing Workshop: Students are involved in journal writing or working on long term writing projects.  We use the Six Traits writing program as a model.    The last 10 minutes of this workshop is reserved for the Author’s Chair where students voluntarily share their writing.  This is also the time when we work on handwriting.  We use the Zaner-Blozer program.  Spelling is also a focus at this time.  We use the Fountas and Pinnell program.
